Step by step
- Pick your modelDecide whether you will resell branded products, sell homemade items, or both. Reselling is simpler to start, while homemade products need licence checks first.
- Check the rulesKeep bills for all stock. For homemade cosmetics, check current licence and labelling rules with CDSCO or your state drug control authority, and check GST on the official portal.
- Set a starting budgetPlan an approximate budget for stock, packaging and labels, and keep some money aside to reorder the items that sell.
- Choose your first 10 productsPick everyday repeat items such as face wash, sunscreen, lip balm and hair oil that suit your niche and the buyers around you.
- Buy genuine stockBuy from authorised distributors or trusted wholesalers, check seals, batch numbers and expiry dates, and start with small quantities.
- Set up your online shopPhotograph products in daylight, add honest descriptions, prices and shade or skin-type details, and create a free shop link you can share on WhatsApp.
- Tell people who trust youMessage friends, family and neighbours personally, post daily on WhatsApp Status, and note what people ask about.
Is a beauty business right for you?
It suits you if you already enjoy trying products, people ask you what you use, and you are comfortable answering questions about skin types and shades. Much of the selling is advice: which sunscreen for oily skin, which lipstick shade for a wheatish tone.
There are two very different paths. Reselling means buying sealed, branded products and selling them on. Making your own means producing soaps, oils, scrubs or creams at home. Reselling is quicker to start. Making your own gives you a unique product, but it comes with more rules and more responsibility for safety.
What you need and an approximate budget
For reselling, your main cost is stock. Many sellers start with a small range of fast-moving items and add more as orders come in. For homemade products you need raw materials, moulds, a weighing scale, clean containers, labels and a separate clean workspace.
These are rough, approximate ranges to help you plan, not fixed amounts. Your actual cost depends on your city, brands and quantities.
- Reselling starter stock: roughly ₹5,000 to ₹20,000
- Homemade soaps or oils starter kit and first batch: roughly ₹3,000 to ₹15,000
- Packaging, labels, bubble wrap and tape: roughly ₹1,000 to ₹3,000
- A phone with a decent camera, a plain backdrop and good daylight: often what you already have
Legal basics: what to check before you sell
Reselling sealed branded products is the simpler case. Buy from authorised distributors or reliable wholesalers, keep your bills, never sell expired or tampered items and do not repack or relabel branded products.
Making your own cosmetics is different. In India, manufacturing cosmetics for sale is regulated, and a licence may be required depending on what you make. Rules can change, so check the current requirements with CDSCO or your state drug control authority before you sell homemade creams, soaps, oils or scrubs. Labels usually need details like ingredients, quantity, batch, dates and your contact details.
GST registration is usually needed only once your turnover crosses the threshold, or if you sell on certain online marketplaces. Thresholds and rules change, so check the current position with a CA or the official GST portal. If you start growing, a simple Udyam registration can also be useful.
Choosing a niche and your first 10 products
Do not try to stock everything. Pick a clear focus that matches the people around you: skincare for college students, natural and herbal products, bridal makeup kits, men's grooming or hair care for curly hair. A clear niche makes your shop easy to remember and your Status easy to follow.
For a skincare reseller, a first 10 could look like this:
- Two face washes, one for oily and one for dry skin
- One moisturiser and one sunscreen in a popular SPF
- One vitamin C or niacinamide serum
- Lip balm and a tinted lip product
- Kajal or eyeliner
- A sheet mask pack and a hair oil
- A small gift combo that bundles three items
Naming your shop and setting up online
Pick a short name that is easy to spell in a WhatsApp message and hints at what you sell, like Glow by Riya or Neem and Rose. Check that the name is not already a well-known brand.
You can open a free shop on ShopShare in under a minute and get your own link like yourname.shopshare.in. Add clear photos, prices and shade or skin-type details. Buyers tap Order on WhatsApp and the chat opens with the product already named, so you spend less time asking which item they meant.
