Step by step
- Check your spaceMake sure you have a balcony, terrace or courtyard with enough light, and time each day for watering and care.
- Choose your nichePick a focus such as low-maintenance indoor plants, succulents, herbs, flowering balcony plants or plants in designer pots.
- Check the basicsAvoid protected wild plants, check courier rules for live plants, and check GST and any state nursery rules as you grow.
- Buy from a wholesale nurseryVisit a local wholesale nursery, check roots and leaves for pests, and buy a small first batch of your first 10 plants.
- Repot and settle the plantsMove plants into clean, attractive pots with good potting mix, and let them settle for a few days before selling.
- Photograph and listPhotograph each plant in soft daylight and list it with height, pot size, light needs and a care tip.
- Tell neighbours firstShare your shop link with neighbours, friends and society groups, and offer free pickup so buyers can see the plants.
Is a plant business right for you?
Plants are living stock. They need watering, light, repotting and attention even on days with no orders. This business suits you if you enjoy that daily care and can answer questions like why are my leaves turning yellow.
You also need some space with good light: a terrace, balcony, courtyard or a small plot. Plants that sit in a dark room while waiting to be sold will lose their shape and value.
What you need and an approximate budget
Your basic setup is plants, pots, potting mix and tools. Many sellers start by buying young plants from a wholesale nursery and growing them on for a few weeks, which gives better margins than reselling immediately. Others propagate from cuttings, which costs very little but takes time.
These are approximate ranges for planning, not fixed amounts:
- Starter plants from a wholesale nursery: roughly ₹3,000 to ₹15,000
- Pots and planters in a few sizes: roughly ₹2,000 to ₹10,000
- Potting mix, cocopeat, compost and pebbles: roughly ₹1,000 to ₹3,000
- Tools, sprayer, shade net and trays: roughly ₹1,000 to ₹4,000
Legal basics
Selling common ornamental plants from home is usually simple, but check any local rules in your area, especially if you plan to run a larger nursery or use land commercially. Some states have nursery registration rules for larger operations, so check with your state horticulture department if you grow at scale.
Do not collect or sell protected wild plants, and be careful with plants that are restricted from moving between states. If you courier plants, check courier rules for live plants.
GST registration is usually needed only once your turnover crosses the threshold, or if you sell on certain online marketplaces. Rules can change, so check the current position on the official GST portal or with a CA. Note that GST treatment of live plants and of pots or planters can differ, so ask a CA if you are unsure.
Choosing a niche and your first 10 plants
A niche helps buyers remember you. Options include low-maintenance indoor plants for flats, succulents and cacti, air-purifying desk plants, flowering balcony plants, herbs and kitchen gardens, or designer planters with plants.
A sample first 10 for an indoor plant shop:
- Money plant in a small ceramic pot
- Snake plant

- A succulent set of three in small pots
- Areca palm for a living room corner
- Tulsi in a decorative pot
- A desk plant gift with a care card
Naming your shop and setting up online
Pick a short name that feels green and fresh, like Balcony Greens or Little Leaf Co. Make sure it is easy to say and spell.
You can set up a free shop on ShopShare in under a minute and get a link like yourname.shopshare.in. List each plant with its pot size, height, light needs and a care tip. Buyers tap Order on WhatsApp, and the chat opens with the plant already named, so you can quickly confirm delivery or pickup.
